Giraudo Mother Nassa

Mother Nassa is a single variety Italian pear cider (bordering on being termed a perry) made by Giraudo Brothers with pears Maternassa from Roero, in Piemonte region in Italy. Despite being medium-full bodied, this pear cider retains a considerable freshness and is full of really interesting primary and secondary notes.

Tasting Notes on Mother Nassa by Giraudo

Mother Nassa is an incredible pear cider made with pear Madernassa, indigenous of Roero, in Piemonte region in Italy. This pear variety is quite rare and is believed to be a natural cross between a Martin Sec pear and a wild pear tree.

The title “Mother Nassa” is a play on words on the name of the pear variety: “Mader” derives from the Latin word “Mater” meaning mother; indeed this is an old pear variety of pear that could be considered the mother of many pears.

Notes from the producers

Original language (Italian)Sidro dolce prodotto con pere raccolte in un unico antico appezzamento. Eta’ stimata 110 anni. Varieta’ secolare (XVI sec) autoctona del Piemonte. Le sue caratteristiche organolettiche la rendono eccezionale se fermentata in purezza. La riteniamo la madre di tuttte le varieta’ di pera: Mother Nassa

English: “Sweet cider made from pears harvested from a single ancient plot of land. Estimated age 110 years. Centuries-old variety (16th cent.) indigenous to Piedmont. Its organoleptic characteristics make it exceptional when fermented in purity. We consider it the mother of all pear varieties: Mother Nassa”

Food pairing

I find this cider perfect for an end of meal but without necessarily being a dessert cider.  Sidro and Cider, where I bought this cider, recommends pairing Mother Nassa with mature cheeses, fruit-based desserts and dry pastries – which I find particularly fitting. I had it with Cantucci di Prato (dry Italian biscuits) and found that they really bring out the floral notes in this cider in a very interesting way.
